About Us
The Missouri River is North
America's longest river and serves an important role
to the community - both environmentally and economically.
Through the years, the impact humans and industry have
had on the Missouri led to the depletion of wildlife
habitat and subsequent destruction of the historic riverine
ecosystem. Today, with the support and vision of former
Nebraska Senator Bob Kerrey and through the coordinated
efforts of far-sighted individuals and organizations,
much of this Missouri River corridor area is being reclaimed
- for wildlife and for the recreational, educational,
economic and cultural benefit of its people.
Back to the River, a multi-dimensional
project to enhance an ecological, recreational and historical
corridor among the Missouri River in Nebraska and Iowa,
has evolved from a long-standing dream of the river
as the heart of our community. That dream is being realized
through the combined efforts of public and private sponsors,
who recognize a balance between the Missouri's historically-recognized
value as a commercial waterway and as an important natural
habitat.
Back to the River encompasses both
sides of a 64-mile stretch from Mondamin, Iowa and Herman,
Nebraska, to the mouth of the Platte River.
