California Bend once supported many native species
of fish, wading birds, shorebirds,
waterfowl and mammals. However, man-made channelization,
flood control and bank
stabilization projects caused river degradation
and sediment accumulation in its
remnant channels. These efforts damaged the surrounding
wildlife habitats and resulted
in subsequent species decline.
To return its natural backwater chute, wetlands,
floodplains and aquatic habitats to their
former state, the California Bend restoration
project was established. Extending
approximately 1.5 miles along the Missouri River,
project objectives include excavating
sediments, lowering dikes and planting floodplain
vegetation.
